I was walking in downtown Evanston, IL during Rush Hour when I saw a woman walking home from her evening commute. I was immediately taken by the colorful mural behind her, and the horizontal bands of shadow that broke over the tracks and down to the sidewalk. The mural was painted years ago by Michael Montenegro, a local artist in Evanston. When I painted the figure, I blurred some of the edges of her silhouette to convey motion. She is a mere silhouette; not a painting of a particular person. People rush through life without taking the time to notice all of the complex shapes and colors around them. I try to capture little glimpses of the city in my paintings to get people to slow down and LOOK.
