The Bread Line
The Bread Line
Oil on Raymar Linen Panel, framed
15" h by 12" w by 1.5" deep

This is a monochromatic, blue oil painting of three figures, who are part of a larger "Bread Line" sculpture by George Segal at the FDR Memorial in Washington, DC. I was drawn to these three straight-faced, life-sized figures dressed in nondescript overcoats and battered hats. They are standing before a wall of dark brick. In general, I like to paint strangers in the city. Instead of making portraits of individuals, I prefer rendering allegorical figures who represent the human condition. I have a great respect for FDR because he created many social welfare programs, such as the WPA (Works Progress Administration) that gave struggling artists an income during the Great Depression.
