Coffee Urn

This is a watercolor painting I did as a demo in class for my fundamentals students who were learning to paint shiny objects in watercolor. We discussed how metallic objects are challenging to paint because they are covered with abstract shapes of light and shadow. Most of the neutral tones are hard to mix, and the students learn to make them on their own by mixing complements or mixing the primaries together. The color of "gray/silver" can be quite deceptive.

This painting is about ritual: coffee, reading the paper, waking up.
